Sleeping on the examination table - This
is an episode when I was rotating through Brooklyn Veterans Affairs Hospital(VA
Hospital). By the way, VA stood for Veterans Administration in our time,
but it was changed to Veterans Affairs later on.I donft know why. Anyhow, I was working at the medical ward on the 11th floor. We were supposed to take a rest in the resident room on the first floor during on-call nights. We were usually called from the ward 5 or 6 times a night. That meant we had to go up and down 5 or 6 times a night between the first and 11th floor, if we used the resident room to nap. In order to secure more time to rest, we found an idea; napping on the examining table on the 11th floor. The examining table was high above the floor; much taller than the Japanese equivalent. The floor was a hard linoleum. There were about 20 nights to nap on the examining table during the 2 month rotation. Luckily I never fell from the table for those 2 months. This experience helps in my daily life now. I sometimes take a nap on
the carpet after drinking some beer and watching TV. Usually I sleep soundly
on the carpet til the morning. My wife always asks me how I can sleep
on the carpet til the morning. Sleeping on the comfortable carpet is just
like a heaven for me compared with the hard and dangerous examining table,
you know. Dr. Kido's office
