157) Walkman Making a Solid Profit
On Sunday morning at the end of October 2024, a TV program called “Gacchiri Monday” aired an episode titled “Gachiri (Making a Solid Profit) Monday” During the episode, they introduced a bedding dryer made by subtracting pipes and bags. The company's president was the former Sony employee who developed the Walkman.
The Walkman was commercialized in 1979 and became a global hit in the 1980s as a portable cassette player. Steve, whom I introduced in my previous blog, had diverse hobbies and a deep knowledge of music. I believe it was one day in 1981. In the morning, when I saw Steve at the hospital, he said, "Tomoyuki, Sony has invented something amazing. It's the Walkman. You know it, right? You can take it with you on your morning jog, and the sound doesn't skip at all." The boyish smile on Steve's face at that moment is still vividly etched in my memory.
