- Brooklyn Heights -

Brooklyn Heights is situated in the most west part of Brooklyn facing Manhattan across the East River. This district doesn't represent the image of much of Brooklyn which often in the last 25 years, " filthy and dangerous". It is, simply speaking a historic residential area which mainly the wealthy can only afford. Since the buildings are over 100 years old, they are quite small, and space is limited. Most of the buildings are condominiums rather than individual houses. Although the condominium buildings are old, they are expensive because they are cherished relics of the past. The sales points are chic atmosphere of the area and the gorgeous views (especially at night) of Manhattan.

The chairman of our department lived in Brooklyn Heights. I visited his condo twice; once at the time of my interview and the second time at a department party hosted by the chairman. His condo was rather small by American standards but the the view of Manhattan at night from the large window of the living room was so gorgeous. This night view is much more effective than any paintings hung on the walls that I saw during the party.
There are also many celebrities living in the neighborhood. The chairman told me he often saw Woody Allen walking on the sidewalks.
Speaking of Allen, there are several of his movies shot in Brooklyn Heights as far as remember.

Bert, an Italian American fellow resident lived in Brooklyn Heights.
He rented an old apartment with reasonable rent. His apartment had a balcony with a view of Manhattan. We were invited to his home for a party on Independence Day, July 4th. Bert was a good cook. He made us pasta and salad and served Italian wine. We enjoyed seeing the fireworks over the East River. It was a memorable Independence Day during my days in US.
