It was December 1980. I took the first vacation since I started the residency in Brooklyn. I was traveling in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.
On December 8, I happened to see large pictures of John Lennon on every newspaper at a newsstand. I bought one of them and tried to read it. Since it was written in Spanish, I couldn't understand what
really happened. I could figure out at least two words; Roosevelt Hospital. I thought that John was hospitalized because of an accident or some disease. I learned from a Mexican who spoke English later on
that day what really happened. I was so shocked. I was a Beatles fan and also bought most of the John's albums after Beatles. I had just started to live in the same town as John did, and all of sudden he was murdered, which I learned about while in Mexico. C'est la vie.
More than 20 years have passed since then. There is always some notice
about John in the media on that December day. Whenever I read again about
that day, I remember the episode in Mexico.
