- Noise pollution in Manhattan -

my neighborhood

One of the differences I noticed when I moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan is the noise at night. The noise was much louder in Manhattan, of course.
I was living on the 12th floor in lower Manhattan, where I still heard a lot of noise at night. First of all, the noise from cars. Manhattan never sleeps.
Cars never stop moving even after midnight. Police cars and ambulance were especially very noisy. They sometimes honked their horns in a strange melody on purpose.

Besides cars the residents of the apartments held parties on some floors on the weekends. It was worse when the party was on the floor of mine.
In summertime, the widows were open and the noise was intolerable.

As many people know, Italy became the champion in World Cup Soccer in 2006. The last time Italy won the championship was in 1982 when I was living in Manhattan. Right after midnight when the cable TV broadcast the victory of the Italian team, hundreds cars appeared in Lower Manhattan and honked with happiness for Italy. They screamed "ITALIA," not" ITALY."
I wondered that there were so many Italian Americans living in Manhattan.
