- A rat's suicide in Bronx -

Seiji was a research fellow in Sacramento, California. He loved NYC and visited NYC many times. I often joked to him, " Why don't you buy a commuter tickets between Sacramento and New York?"
One of those occasions, we visited Bronx Zoo. The zoo was not particularly interesting, so in the late afternoon, we left and began walking to the parking lot.
All of a sudden a large rat appeared from the roadside and ran across the road.
A car was moving towards the rat. The road was right near the parking lot and the car was moving very slowly. Surprisingly, the rat literally jumped in front of the moving car. Of course, the rat was killed instantly; flattened.
Seiji and I saw this weird incident with our mouths wide open.
" Even rats commit suicide in New York," said Seiji.
"Too much stress here even for a rat," I responded.

We worked together at the same hospital in Osaka later on. We sometimes talked about the suicide of the rat in NYC with young nurses at the hospital.
No one ever believed our story.
